Lightfoot shares a common bond with her Grandmother (E-li-si) even death can’t dissolve. When the Georgia guards march her family to a deportation fort Lightfoot escapes. Following Indian trails Lightfoot hides in a cave and exists on herbs and berries. Beaver, an interracial youth, finds Lightfoot and talks her into finding sanctuary with his family. The road to freedom is hazardous, but Lightfoot finds both love and freedom where the rabbits dance.
