Only someone who is a professional writer could understand how difficult it is to cut out hunks of your manuscript. I was given the task of shortening the time wherein the decision is made for the entire family to become immigrants to colonial Georgia from eight to four pages.
Delete, delete, delete…Can I really do with out that line? First of all went my prologue. I had no trouble seeing it was no longer necessary. Delete, delete, delete. I felt akin to a surgeon cutting away any lingering possibilities of a deadly disease.
Finally I arrived at four pages of connected, sensible interaction that caused the father to understand his only satisfying conclusion to follow was to take his entire family.
My critique editor/ friend liked what I had done and I’m greatly encouraged.
