DID YOU KNOW that long before the California Gold Rush in 1849 there was a Gold Rush in the Cherokee Nation, near present day Dahlonega, Georgia?  In 1828 gold was discovered on Ward’s Creek near present day Dahlonega, Georgia. By 1830 it was reported that over four thousand prospectors were trying their luck on Yahoola Creek.  The Georgia legislature passed a law saying no Cherokee could dig for gold, even on their own land.  Other cruel laws were passed by the Georgia legislature.
